Failure to Detect an Anti-mutagenic Effect of Chloramphenicol in Ultraviolet-treated Polar Cap Cells (early Germ Track)
نویسندگان
چکیده
is well established that chloramphenicol reduces the ultraviolet-induced 'Lutation rate in bacteria, as first reported by WITKIN (1956). In view of the importance of this discovery in its bearing on the mutational event, it was considered desirable to determine whether chloramphenicol had a similar effect in higher organisms, and in particular in Drosophila. Interest in the problem at hand is not in the chemical itself but in the broader question as to whether protein synthesis (which is prevented by chloramphenicol) is a necessary step in the mutational process. Preliminary results reported by us (1959) indicated that when chloramphenicol was applied to the polar caps of Drosophila (the early germ track) for a short interval after ultraviolet treatment of the polar caps and when in addition the developing flies were fed on chloramphenicol-containing food throughout their life span, it had no effect on the induced mutation rate.

The proportionality between mutation rate and ultraviolet dose after photoreactivation in Drosophila.
1 T has been previously shown that when the polar cap cells of Drosophila (early germ track cells) are treated with various doses of ultraviolet light and the lethal mutation rate plotted against the dose, the resulting dose-rate curve rises rapidly at the lower doses employed. With further increase in dose it becomes less and less steep, and when the dose is large enough to give a detectable r...
متن کاملP-8: The Protective Effect of Ascorbic Acid on The Germ Cells Population and Daily Sperm Production in Mice Treated with Sodium Arsenite
Background Oxidative stress has been suggested to be a major cause of reproductive failure. Arsenic as an environmental toxicant can exert malformation in the reproductive system by inducing oxidative stress. Ascorbic acid, a potent antioxidant, is able to restrict oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the adverse effect of sodium arsenite on the germ cells population and d...
متن کاملI-18: The Role of Sex Chromosomes in Female Germ Cell Differentiation
Background When gonadal sex reversal occurs in mammalian species, the resultant XX males and XY females become infertile or subfertile, suggesting critical roles of sex chromosomes in germ cell differentiation. The objective of our study is to clarify the mechanism of infertility in the B6.YTIR (XY) sex-reversed female mouse, which can be attributed to a failure in the second meiotic division i...
متن کاملEffect of Cold Atmospheric Plasma on Gene Expression and Methylation of Genes Involved in Colorectal Cancer
Background and purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is ranked as the second most common cancer in men and the third most common cancer in women worldwide. Routine treatments have many side effects and little efficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) on epigenetic changes of some genes involved in CRC progression. Materials and methods: Prolif...
متن کاملThe effect of BMP4 on mouse embryonic stem cell proliferation and differentiation into primordial germ cells
Background and Aim: Artificial gamete production from stem cells is a novel strategy for treatment of infertility. Among various stem cell sources, embryonic stem cells (ESC) can be considered as an appropriate source for in vitro formation of germ cells. In this study we evaluated the effect of BMP4 on proliferation and differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells into primordial germ cells (...
